My Attempt to Be More Social

Monday, 29 September 2014

I don't know if you guys knew this, but I'm really shy. Not the kind of shy where I get nervous about talking to people in person but then I'm really social online. No, I'm shy everywhere; in person, on the phone, and even online. I haven't had any online friends since everybody decided to leave Piczo because they hated it (that was about four years ago). And you know what? It's kind of my own fault.

Obviously, I can't really help being shy. I always have been, and meeting new people can often be a struggle for me. Even today, I still have trouble asking people that I'm close to for help, and it takes me at least two days to reply to an email.

But what does this have to do with blogging? I don't feel like I'm fully a part of the book blogging community, and it's because I've spent so long nestled away in my little corner, watching people interact with each other, then wishing that I could do the same and then shying away back into my corner.

Every now and again I think about whether I should continue blogging and I always come up with three reasons as to why:

  • I don't think that my posts have enough personality
  • I'm losing my motivation due to the fact that my time management skills suck
  • I don't talk to anybody.
I actually only started commenting on blogs properly this year, which is pretty bad, but what I really need to do is start talking to people properly over on those Twitters. And even though I do talk about myself quite a lot, I don't feel like people really know me yet. So, allow me to re-introduce myself.

Hi!

  • My name is Louise, I'm 19, and I'm from the North East of England
  • Apart from books, I love films (my second love), cartoons, video games, normal TV shows, and writing
  • I love, love, love, love The Simpsons. Just try to beat me at Simpsons trivia. Go on, just try it.
  • My favourite Disney movie is Tarzan (two worlds, one faaaamiilyyyy ~), and I'm still working on reading the books (two down, twenty three to go!)
  • I tend to make my own gifs, simply because I can (if you ever see a gif without a source link, it was made by me!)
  • My current favourite TV show is Dexter (and I've only read the first book so far)
  • I'm addicted to Starbucks and buying socks with fun patterns on (plain socks are boring)
  • My favourite colour is blue
  • I have the most humongous crushes on Henry Cavill, Tom Hiddleston, and Anton Yelchin (that's my personal holy trinity of hotness).
  • The city where I'm from is where Jabberwocky was written.
  • I'm studying English at university
  • If I could have one superpower, I'd be telepathic. Just to freak people out.

Now it's your turn!
  • Who are you? Where are you from?
  • Apart from books, what else do you love?
  • Do you have a favourite TV show?
  • Do you like Disney? If so, what's your favourite Disney movie?
  • What non-bookish thing are you addicted to?
  • What's your favourite colour?
  • Do you have any celebrity crushes? If so, who?
  • Tell me something cool or interesting about where you're from
  • Are you at school or college? What do you study (if you did go, what did you study?)
  • If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
Let's be friends! If you see me around Twitter, don't be afraid to say hi (like I am)!

  1. I found it very difficult to start commenting and participating in the blogging community at first as well and I know I left some cringe worthy comments in which I basicaly said nothign beside good review or great post. Nowadays commenting has become more easy and I found out I love it. I am bit shy as well, although it's more in real life then online.

I am from the Netherlands, I can't reallt think of anything weird beside the fact that everyone here knows how to swim and cycle and the whole country is flat. My favourite colour is green, but I also love red. I studied Psychology at the university of Leyden and was most interest in social and consumer psychology. I also love weird socks!

  2. I know that feeling Louise! I'm incredibly shy too, but thanks to blogging I feel much more open. It takes some time and things like Twitter are SCARY, but everyone is so friendly and easy to talk with :) You can always tweet me to start a conversation.

Who are you? Where are you from?
I'm Melanie (just Mel for friends) I am 23 and feel very old :'), especially because I don't feel 23 at all. I'm still stuck at.. 18 or something like that. I'm from the rainy Netherlands.

Apart from books, what else do you love?
A lot of things, actually. I like to draw even when I'm not very good at it. I'm addicted to TV shows and movies (DISNEY or animations in general for the win) So yes to the Disney question. I'm OBSESSED. Beauty and the beast <333 And for the TV shows, I'm in love with Once upon a time, New Girl, Game of thrones, Big bang theory. I loved The office and I binge-watched all the seasons this year. Breaking Bad was pretty good - and that surprised me, normally I don't like such shows. SHERLOCK. Also fantastic. Uhmm, I used to write a lot of poetry, but all my inspiration is now put into my reviews and other posts. I like gaming, also old fashioned board games. I really like Just Dance on the Wii even when I don't have great dance moves & the Lego games on the PS3 :D

    What's your favourite colour?
    Pastel green and blue.

Do you have any celebrity crushes? If so, who?
Yep. Ryan Gosling, Tom Hiddleston, Robert Downey Jr. and girl crush on Natalie Dormer even when I don't fall on woman. She is simply gorgeous.

Tell me something cool or interesting about where you're from.
We have Stroopwafels, Stroopkoeken en pannenkoeken.

Are you at school or college? What do you study (if you did go, what did you study?)
I'm in my 4th year, which means I have two internships and I'll get my Bachelor next year (hopefully) It all started out as Higher Laboratory Research and I'm now specialized in Microbiology with a minor in Infection diseases :)

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
This changes every time, haha. Right now I'd love to become invisible when I want. I could listen to conversations and it would come in handy if I'd ever come in a dangerous situation.

    Sorry for the rambling :)

  3. I totally understand what you mean about being shy! When i first started blogging, I was awful at commenting (oh, the shame >.<) and I'd see all these bloggers being friendly on Twitter etc and think: man, that's never going to happen to me. But it did, when I finally shed my fear and starting talking to people. Randomly. That's how it starts! And I know just tweeting someone or replying to someone can be scary, but it feels so good afterwards because you've made this huge step in integrating into the community. And on that note, this community is awesome and I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to befriend another book lover!

    As for your questions:

Who are you? Where are you from?
    I'm Chiara and I'm from Australia :D

Apart from books, what else do you love?
I love movies. And TV shows. And writing.

Do you have a favourite TV show?
Ohmygosh I think I have TOO MANY favourite TV shows. At the moment my favourite (unfinished) show is The Walking Dead. I cannot even express my love for that show.

Do you like Disney? If so, what's your favourite Disney movie?
I ADORE DISNEY. And my favourite is The Lion King. :D

What non-bookish thing are you addicted to?
I was about to write: blogging! Until I realised that I'm a book blogger and so that is definitely a bookish thing. In that case ... collecting steampunk clothes!

    What's your favourite colour?
    Blue - all shades!

Do you have any celebrity crushes? If so, who?
I have too many celebrity crushes, although I swear it always comes back to Christian Bale.

Tell me something cool or interesting about where you're from
Uhm. Australia has the largest number of poisonous animals (I'm pretty sure).

Are you at school or college? What do you study (if you did go, what did you study?)
I'm in college in my Honours year, studying marine biology!

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
To stop time when I'm reading so that I could read ALL THE BOOKS.

I wish you all the luck in branching out, Louise and if you ever want to talk books or Disney or practically anything - I'm all ears ^.^

  4. Haha, don't worry. You're not the only one who is horrible at being social. I am too. I used to be fairly good at least commenting wise when I joined the blogosphere, but then life got busy and I sort of disappeared. I try to use Twitter every once in a while but I feel like I'm never witty or interesting enough to tweet so I just sort of try to crash into conversations when I can, which is never too good. It's all just a bunch of fail >.<

But hi Louise! My name is Asti and I blog over at Oh, the Books! I'm originally from Indiana (there's nothing cool or interesting that happened there, sorry) but have been in the UK for the past year pursuing a Publishing MA degree (Kingston University). My student visa expires in January, but I'm hoping to maybe convince a company to sponsor me for a work visa so I can stay in the country as I have a boyfriend here I've been dating for almost three years who I do not want to leave. (Oh, and the country is pretty nice too ;))

Books are my main love, but like you I also enjoy TV, films, and games. Pretty much anything that tells a story. Because I have such limited time these days though, I tend to focus most of my free time on books since that's what I blog about. If I do watch TV, it's always crappy reality competition TV shows because I find them to be such fun mindless entertainment. I did grow up watching The Simpsons though and have like ten seasons on DVD back in the States, though my memory is crap so I'm sure you'd still beat me if we were to do trivia against each other.

I do like Disney, though I almost want to say I like Pixar more. If I had to choose a favorite Disney movie though, it'd be Aladdin. I don't know what exactly about it I love, but it was my favorite Disney film growing up. I am sure it has to do with Robin Williams and the magic and the songs. And Aladdin is pretty cute for being animated. haha.

Non-bookish thing I'm addicted to? Clothes? I do enjoy shopping. I've limited my wardrobe to dresses this past year just because I find it to be easier and so I love wandering into clothes stores and hunting down dresses. It's an addiction.

My favorite color is purple. Hence why my posts are purple on my blog :)

I don't have many celebrity crushes anymore. Growing up it was Johnny Depp. (Had a MASSIVE crush on him, even though he drank and smoke and was greasy and all those bad things. I just didn't care.) I also went through a Michael Cera phase and Robert Downey Jr phase. Right now I don't really have one though.

And for your last question, if I could have a superpower it'd be invisibility. I would use my power for evil, I'm sure, to get things I wanted and to spy on people and to freak people out. I just think it'd be a lot of fun, and could come in quite handy!
